Our Top Tips for interviewing on Microsoft Teams

When it comes to interviews, preparation is key and video interviews are no different!

Here are our top five tips to help set you up for success.

1.    Test your technology: One of the most off-putting things during a video interview is bad tech! Cameras freezing and sound that keeps dropping out can leave both interviewer and interviewee feeling flustered and frustrated.

Before joining the Teams call, make sure your internet connection is stable and your camera and microphone are working properly. It’s also a good idea to have a backup plan in case of technical issues, such as joining from a different device or using a mobile Hotspot instead of a Wi-Fi connection.

Remember, if something does go wrong with your technology, it's not the end of the world. Try to remain calm and keep your interviewer informed on when you expect to be back online.

2.    Dress professionally: Just because you're not meeting in person doesn't mean you don’t need to dress to impress! Dress as if you were attending an in-person interview. Multiple studies have proven that dressing well will increase your overall performance and heightens others' impressions of you.

3.    Choose your interview space: Choose a quiet, well-lit location with a neutral background. Try to minimise any distractions by placing any devices you aren’t using, such as your mobile phone, into another room.

Also, take time to consider what’s behind you – in other words, what your interviewer will see. Pets running through the house, or family members walking behind you, for example, can be distracting for those interviewing you!

Top Tip: use the ‘background blur’ function on Microsoft Teams to ensure you are the main focus point!

4.    Practice your answers: Research common interview questions and practice your responses out loud. This will help you feel more confident and prepared.

5.    Maintain eye contact: How do you maintain eye contact during a video interview? Although it may feel a little unnatural, try to look directly at the camera when you are speaking as this will help you appear more engaged and confident also while mimicking the experience of ‘eye contact’ for your interviewers.
